October is the month of the Holy Rosary. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is on the 7th, and Pope Leo XIII dedicated the month to the rosary in 1883. Pope Saint John Paul II said that the rosary was his favorite prayer and encouraged the faithful to pray it frequently. In his 2002 apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, he described the rosary as Christocentric and contemplative. These qualities might seem surprising at as glance, but as he explains, Mary is the model of contemplation of Christ. She "lived with her eyes fixed on Christ, treasuring his every word." While "recitation runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas," the quiet rhythm helps the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord's life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord.
