World War II veteran Robert Leckie colorfully described the immense diversity found among the saints in his book These Are My Heroes: A Modern Study of the Saints: "It is also a pleasure to know that [Ignatius of Loyola] was short--only about five feet, two inches--as were so many of the Lord's movers and shakers...In stature, other saints were huge like Camillus de Lellis or St. Thomas à Becket and Thomas Aquinas. Naturally enough, most of them were in-between, like most of us; and here is another characteristic of the saints that should endear them to us: alike in their sanctity they were as diverse in face, figure and personality as any other crowd of about five thousand men, women and children."
